    Great review! I use this bass clarinet and it works great for my needs. I do constantly struggle with the octave key being sticky but I've solved this by keeping cigarette paper under it when I'm not using it. Seems to work fine then. Overall a great instrument if you're doing mainly supporting work and no heavy lifting :)

    I borrow this model bass clarinet from my university and I definitely agree with you on the sloppiness of the register key. I kind of have to anticipate going over the break when I play it, which is tough on a lot of the pieces that we play. It gets pretty annoying. And, yes, the keys come out of adjustment pretty easily. But, other than that, it has a decent tone to it!

    I've played this model for about 7 years, my thoughts:
    1. Yes, the register key mechanism isn't that great. It gets wet, requiring you to blow it dry on occasion otherwise you don't get a proper Bb tone. It gets out of adjustment either requiring you to bend the springs. I've had to add thickness to a piece of cork on the mechanism because it otherwise wouldn't work properly.
    2. In the 4 physical different horns of this model I've played, they all had terrible intonation in for long C and B, in some cases no amount of jaw adjustment would fix it and keep the tone passable. I basically just stopped playing long B in whatever I it came up.
    3. You could only tune by the neck so far, pull out enough and you make a small pinhole where the gap in the neck collar is. I've generally filled this gap with cork grease and/or taped over it. I believe the newer model (this one) had a longer insert length, while the older version had a shorter one.
    4. I prefer it over the wooden Yamaha Low C model, maybe our universities horn just sucked, but the plastic one simply just sounded better.
    Other than those issues, I've otherwise enjoyed it.

  • @RichardMigneron
    @RichardMigneron 5 лет назад +3

    I've been playing this model for about 3 years now.
    For the sticking register key, from time to time, I just put the piece of blue cotton between the key and the hole, press on the key (not too hard) and pull on the cotton piece. Than it plays ok for 2 or 3 months, I think something sticky accumulates on the pad.
    Another issue, is the low B fork key, which forced me to really flex my right ring finger. So I had my clarinet specialist solder a key and now it looks a lot like the left hand fork key (E flat).
    Otherwise, for those having the rubber rings not cooperating when putting the clarinet together, a bit of cork grease on them (once every 3 months or so) will solve that and doesn't seem to degrade the rings at all.
    Apart from that, I love the fact that it seems to resonate more than a Buffet.
    I also, bought a Selmer Focus mouthpiece, it seems to amplify the resonance with respect to the plastic mouthpiece supplied.

    • @erezk2170
      @erezk2170 5 лет назад

    I recently purchased this horn as well. I love the case, though some extra space for music and accessories would be nice.
    But crossing the break feels really hard, and I also don't like the ligature and the mouthpiece. I saw this on my YCL-255 as well. I upgraded to Vandoren Optimum ligature and a Black Diamond mouthpiece, and I'm now really happy with it. As a beginner, I feel very good about having purchased this horn. Well worth the money.

    Thank you for the video. I found the bit about the thumb rest particularly helpful. I play an old Vito Resotone model and have been having handling problems - my wrist was aching, my thumb hurt and my right index finger was fouling the Eb side key. Checking the instrument I found that the thumb hook had already been raised by about 5mm. I raised it by another 25mm to bring the thumb in line with the index finger and covered it with felt. This solved the hand problems immediately.
    This still leaves the weight problem when playing standing but I suspect that the judicious use of helium balloons .......

    Student wise, this is pretty much the best bass clarinet you can get. My school owns 4 of these but there are 5 bass clarinet players. I'm the only one of the 5 that's in marching band and we're not allowed to match with the nice Instruments so I get the bad one but I really want this and hopefully I'll get it once someone graduates. The only thing is that bass clarinet takes a long time to out together and apart which isn't good when youre at school and when you're marching and the way this case is it's another step you have to do I usually see them were the two main parts are connected and when I played this model in middle school it was difficult having to take those pieces apart too but other than that I really really like this model

    I get asked from time to time, what my thoughts are on this model. I've played this exact model. Our high school program purchased four new BCLs around 2012. What I/we noticed is that all four had problems with the register mechanism not working properly. It often stuck open (like you discovered). Additionally, the O-rings in the lower joints made it nearly impossible to put together. The amount of force needed was crazy. The idea is understandable but it never really wore down enough. The lower B was consistently out of tune. These were the ongoing problems we had with all four YCL-221 from 2012 to about 2018. I hope Yamaha will revamp this model and correct these problems in the future. By the way, thanks for your review.

    I tried one of these in a local store. It played a bit sharp when cold (tuned to A-442) so I pulled the neck slightly and it was fine. Over an hour it warmed up considerably and I ended up pulling the neck about half an inch and with that the intonation across the range went.
    This was a pity because it sounded well across the registers, with a ridiculously easy altissimo, and the keywork felt good under my fingers.
    The test, admittedly on a hot Australian day, was in an air conditioned showroom, was in an air conditioned show room. It was done with two players using a Greg Wier mouthpiece and a Vandoren one.

    I have this model clarinet and I’ve been playing on it for about 2-3 years now.Over time I noticed the fact that the register key continues to be a problem even after going to the shop multiple times to fix and or adjust it.The key work itself,at least for me,have been fairly well I don’t have any problems with them the low register sounds great to me and has been for a while.Although playing the mid Bb using the register key, it always comes out airy and breathy no matter what I try. As a junior in high school I still look at this bass clarinet as a good model to play on especially for a student model bass clarinet.

  • @stevenkieley2503
    @stevenkieley2503 5 лет назад +2

    I have one of these. I use as my backup to my Buffet Prestige low C.
    I have the following issues. In general, it is SHARP. I have to pull way out at the neck to body connection.. The 3rd line B is quite sharp. I glued a cork crescent in the low e flat tone hole to lower the pitch of that note. It's somewhat better, but of course, now the low E is a little flat.
    The pad on the register key was very sticky. I had it replaced and I had my tech install a beefier spring on the the register key mechanism to assist with the sluggish response of that key.
    I found the tone quality acceptable, a little coarse at the louder dynamic volumes, but pleasing at moderate to lower volumes. And yes, the case is a great feature. It is the same size as a Yamaha alto saxophone case that the Yamaha Advantage alto saxophone comes in. I myself am not a fan of the green color, but really, you don't play the case. The good news is I had no problems bringing this case on board an international flight this past summer and stowing it in the overhead storage.

    This model is the one I've been using the longest, and feels much better than the old student selmer bass clarinets. I used one in middle school, and the register key never really worked 100% of the time. The one that I'm using in high school actually has become a good register key. I use it like 5 times more and with use, it becomes more responsive. It took about 6 months for the key to become responsive. This would not he ideal if I were buying my own but for a school instrument it is pretty good

    I thought I'd add a comment as most people who are contemplating starting on bass clarinet are probably going to end up here, just as I did. A while ago I was asked if I would be prepared to switch from soprano clarinet to bass in the concert band that I play in. Having checked out how much the darn things cost, I didn't think I could justify buying anything better than Yamaha. My two main concerns from the various reviews that I watched and read were the sticky register key and the fact of it only going down to Eb. As it turns out, the issue of the sticky register key is very easily solved. All you need to do is buy a little pad dryer for couple of dollars (available from Key Leaves or BG) and stick it under the pad when the instrument is in the case. I've done this from new and have never had any problem whatsoever. On the issue of it only going down to low Eb, my concert band is a fairly decent standard and we play all of the usual repertoire from traditional to modern - only once in the dozens of pieces we've played has a note lower than Eb come up. This was a low D in a Sondheim piece and even then, the alternative upper D was written into the part. So really, I would say that if this is the kind of use that you are thinking of buying if for, it will do the job perfectly adequately. In all honestly, I am now thinking of upgrading to a wooden low C but that's only because I want to, not because I need to.

    Loved the review. I worked at a high school in the California desert near Palm Springs (very hot, very dry) and we bought 4 new Yams just like this. All four had the same problem. Register key sticks and never opened fast enough. But also, the mid section and bell tennons O-rings made it nearly impossible to put together. Way too tight. Possibly a condition of the desert? On the plus side, it was mostly in tune and responsive. Some keys were clangy but overall a decent horn for the cash. My humble opinion of course 😌

    I have bought one (YCL-221 II), and I like it sound-wise very much, and also the basic feel of the key-work. The register key is a week point indeed, though. I had it at the repair shop and it's better now, but it is still less than optimum. The stock mouthpiece 4C is not bad, and a Yamaha 5C even quite nice, especially considering the price... In Germany, where I live, there are not really many alternatives to this horn. I tried also the Jupiter plastic low Eb model, and liked the key-work actually better, but sound of the Yamaha was more convincing to my ears ... I had also tried a Andreas Eastman low C bass which was more or less in the same price range, but that couldn't hold up neither soundwise nor in the quality of the key-work with the Yamaha or Jupiter IMHO...

    I keep a piece of cigarette paper under that top pad at all times when the instrument is on the stand or in the case. It will stick if you look at it funny. I had to have it replaced before I realized how sensitive it is to moisture. I have to pull the neck out about an inch and a half, but when I do that the intonation is amazing. Instrument sounds great down low. I like the compact case.

    Using this bass rn in concert band. I hate it with a burning passion, not only because of the issues it has already (stuffy notes, sticky register key, needs a lot of air), I also have to put up with clinky keywork. Can’t wait to upgrade to the Kessler.

    I have played this model for a few years. The 12th key on the back is an absolute nightmare - the only thing I can fault the instrument for, but it is a pretty big nightmare no less. I have had multiple instrument technicians look at it but it always goes back to the way it was.

    I have this bass and I can’t complain. I use it for doubling (I’m primarily a sax player). My only complaint is the lowest B natural is not speaking well and has needed adjustment a few times. I got my self a good mouthpiece (Selmer Concept) which is much better than the stock Yamaha 4C included with this bass.
    Your Selmer bass is a bad mofo! I have three Selmer Serie II saxophones- alto, tenor, and bari- and they are the real deal.
    Thanks for this video. Very informative.

    I played this instrument during marching season this year and we had a part where we had to jump to and from the higher notes with the register key and it was impossible to play which sucks but I was able to just play the low notes which didn't suck as bad

    Register key for this instrument is messed up, when playing throat Bb it sometimes doesn’t play properly because one of the holes is not staying closed. Very difficult to find the sweet spot for the adjustment screw. Guess I should take the instrument to a dealer for repair 😂

    Which do you think is better the Selmer 1430 or this one you reviewed? I am currently torn and don't know which one to buy. I really liked the case of the Yamaha but the Selmer you mentioned you can play right when you get it out so I don't know. Thoughts?

    I probably played an older model Yamaha but I prefer the buffet 1180 student bass. I think the intonation on the buffet is better, high notes on the buffet sound cleaner because the register key mechanism is better, and my lesson teacher that the buffet 1180 is one of the best student models. Also the body is taken apart into two pieces instead of one like Yamaha.

    Well l just bought one, brand new in a sale! It was £1000 less than others selling at UK dealers. I was really worried cos it arrived in a Yamaha alto sax cardboard box and the proper case looked like and alto sax case. Not to worry it was the bass. Mr Lowenstein has me worried about the speaker key! Haven’t tried it yet as waiting for the reeds to arrive. The body is a mixture of ground African Blackwood and some kind of plastic. We pay a lot of purchase tax in the UK ....20% so the tax free price would have been £1100.

      He's got quite a few reviews of instruments on his channel that would be useful.
      Check with your school first to see what instruments they have that you might be able to borrow. Old Bundys and Vito instruments can fit the bill for a starter if they are in decent shape.

      Yes, check all of the review videos of Michael on his chanel, they should be very useful. I have played on two bass clarinets since 10 years ago: an old low E-flat Selmer and a low C Buffet Prestige, and the color of the Selmer is something I had never heard from other instrument, dark and resonant, I loved it, and many professors and peers agree with me.

    Casual 6 month clarinet player rookie asking a question: what’s the difference between Eb and Bb clarinets?

    • @maximw9362
      @maximw9362 5 лет назад

      Xodiius Eb clarinets are shorter (for kids to be able to get the fingerings right) and basically outdated because nowadays there are even Bb clarinets that just have smaller gaps between the holes. The main difference is of course the tune. If you play a C on the Eb clarinet, the tone that comes out will be an Eb on a piano. For the Bb clarinet it is the same, but with Bb instead of Eb

    • @tereya125
      @tereya125 4 года назад +1

      @@maximw9362 That is wrong! An Eb clarinet plays in the same key as an alto sax, and is generally hard for professional Bb clarinet players to learn. It is typically used in orchestras, along with Bb, Eb alto, Bb bass, and Bb contrabass. They are in no way outdated and are made by many famous manufacturers such as Selmer, Buffet, and others.

    So I'm in a high school band, and I am using a loaner instrument that is the exact model. I also have noticed the register key is very sticky and will only open after about .5 to 1 seconds after I press on the register key. I also have trouble going over the break. Could you give some tips and tricks on how to make it easier to play over the break?
